Zack Snyder’s passion project finally screened at TIFF, and the response is far from the admiration the director is used to. Critics and festival-goers walked away largely disappointed after the world premiere of The Last Photograph.

The Last Photograph premiered in TIFF’s “Special Events” section, and early reactions on X wasted little time. One attendee called it “grotesque, shameless and an utter disgrace from start to finish,” arguing it “should have stayed on the ideas board.” Another summed up the room in two words: “APOCALYPSE NO.”
Several viewers pointed to the film’s slower, stripped-down approach as its undoing. One critic wrote that Snyder “exposes Snyder’s shortcomings as a storyteller through misguided scripting choices, gratuitous violence and nudity, wooden dialogue, and hollow performances.” That same post declared it “easily the worst film I’ve seen at TIFF so far.”
Not everyone walked away furious. One user admitted, “I still enjoyed some parts but I gotta admit some parts were f—— ROUGH.” Another conceded Zack Snyder‘s movie “looked pretty” before listing a string of complaints including “aimless, contrived, misogynistic, convoluted, messy, overtly long.”

The negative reactions to The Last Photograph carry weight because Snyder made this one entirely on his own terms. No studio or streamer backed the production. He directed from a screenplay by Kurt Johnstad, based on his own original story, and served as his own cinematographer. He produced alongside Deborah Snyder through The Stone Quarry, with Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang Productions.
The plot follows an ex-DEA agent who searches South American mountains for his murdered diplomat siblings’ children. A junkie photographer who witnessed the killers helps him, and the journey blurs reality as he confronts past demons. Stuart Martin and Fra Fee star. Hans Zimmer, Omer Benyamin and Steven Doar composed the score.
All in all, whether TIFF represents an outlier or a verdict, the first wave of reactions suggests The Last Photograph will fight an uphill battle.
