Widow's Bay episode 8 ends with a shocked Mayor Tom Loftis finding out the curse isn't lifted after all

Patricia is stalked by the Boogeyman throughout the episode

New episodes of the horror-comedy drop Wednesdays on Apple TV

The curse of Widow's Bay isn't broken just yet.

Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) and his son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) are going to have to resell those Boston Red Sox tickets. Just as the pair were celebrating finally taking Evan off-island for father-son bonding time on the mainland, a knock on the door bursts their bubble.

"It's not over," Wyck (Stephen Root) gravely tells Tom at his front door. Stunned, Tom can only manage to respond with a disbelieving "No."

The moment happens at the end of Widow's Bay's eighth episode, titled "Your Baggage," which dropped on Apple TV on Wednesday, June 3.

In the previous episode, Tom and Wyck went to great lengths to vanquish Richard Warren — the walking-dead corpse of Widow's Bay's founder, played by Hamish Linklater. After pulling off their nautical mission, they thought they'd successfully ended the generational curse that haunts the island, but now they know it didn't work.

Most of episode 8, directed by Andrew DeYoung, follows Patricia (Kate O'Flynn) as she's hunted by the Boogeyman, the masked killer who would get right along with Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. The Boogeyman's return proved the curse was still in effect, and there are only two episodes left in the show's first season to try again to save the superstitious locals.

Rhys, 51, previously told PEOPLE that Widow's Bay is like nothing he's ever seen before — and, admittedly, a "tough one to describe." It's "so much more" than just a horror-comedy, he explained.

"It preys on some very ancient things about our psyches. It’s like the whole psychoanalysis of the deep, dark wood and what it represents," he said. "There are kind of internal horrors that characters have to overcome, as well as possibly external ones — potentially."

He added, "This was one of the funniest, kindest and loveliest groups I’ve ever worked with."

New episodes of Widow's Bay premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV.
