Homelander is now obsessed with immortality and ruling like a god, but Butcher (Karl Urban), now a supe himself, possesses a deadly virus that could take down Homelander and wipe out the entire supe population. And just when things couldn't get any more dangerous, Homelander drags his father, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), back into the fight.

Quaid recently told EW that the show isn't exactly wrapping up with a "fairytale ending."

"It's gonna be pretty gruesome," he said. "I didn't know exactly what it would be, but I knew whatever it was wasn't gonna be great for a lot of the characters. I didn't know who was gonna survive or not, and we really went there this season. There are characters that meet their end."

He added, "We're getting heavy this season in a really interesting, truly grave way."

The main cast is returning for *The Boys *season 5, including Urban as Butcher, Starr as Homelander, and Quaid as Hughie.

In addition to Ackles (Soldier Boy), Moriarty (Annie/Starlight), Alonso (M.M.), and Capone (Frenchie), the season will see the returns of Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko), Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Colby Minifie (Ashley), and Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir II), among others.

There are a few newcomers, too. EW previously reported that *Hamilton *alum Daveed Diggs is joining the season 5 cast — he portrays the corrupt religious supe Oh Father.

*Stranger Things* season 4 star Mason Dye will also appear as Bombsight (a role he'll reprise on the prequel series *Vought Rising*), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (*Never Have I Ever*), Emma Elle Paterson (*Murdoch Mysteries*), and Dylan Colton (*56 Days*) make up the youth superhero team Teenage Kix.

Season 5 will also bring in several characters from *Gen V*, including Jaz Sinclair as Marie, London Thor as Jordan, Lizzie Broadway as Emma, Maddie Phillips as Cate, Asa Germann as Sam, and Keeya King as Marie's sister Annabeth.

*The Boys *season 5 is also bringing a little *Supernatural *magic back to our screens. Ackles will be joined by Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins in episode 5, with Kripke telling EW that their characters are "such douchebags."

"Soldier Boy is no treat either, but they're just really not morally upstanding dudes," he said. "It's a blast to watch them play that. It was just so much fun."
