Shakira says her 2023 single "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" offered "pure catharsis" following her split from Gerard Piqué.

"I really needed to write about what I was going through and not have any censor," Shakira said.

Shakira and the former soccer player ended their 11-year relationship in 2022, and reports of an alleged affair by Piqué soon followed.

Shakira is getting candid about how she moved on from ex Gerard Piqué.

The singing icon and former soccer player separated in 2022 after dating for 11 years and welcoming two sons together, Milan and Sasha. Their split followed rumors of Pique's alleged affair in 2021.

Speaking with PEOPLE, the Colombian superstar shared how her 2023 single "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" offered relief following the breakup.

"It was just pure catharsis," Shakira told the outlet. "I really needed to write about what I was going through and not have any censor."

In January 2023, reports surfaced that the singer allegedly discovered Piqué was cheating via a jar of jam slowly being eaten out of despite her being the only one who liked it in her home. Shakira seemed to allude to this scenario in the music video for her and Rauw Alejandro’s single "Te Felicito," in which she opens a refrigerator and finds Alejandro's head on a platter.

However, Shakira dispelled the viral jam theory in an interview with the Sunday Times in 2024, simply saying, "Not true."

Speaking on the breakup and moving forward, Shakira shared, "Through those challenging moments, I discovered how resilient we all are."

"Life is a bitch, but it’s so worth living because friends are there for you," she added, showing gratitude for loved ones who helped her through the aftermath of her split from Piqué.

The global icon is currently on her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, and will soon be seen co-headlining the first-ever World Cup Final halftime show on July 19 alongside Madonna and BTS.
