As stated in the interviews she gave to biographer Andrew Morton while recording her autobiography Diana: Her True Story in 1992, Princess Diana said that a pair of cufflinks with Camilla Parker Bowles’ initials had caused her first major argument with Prince Charles.

The incident was described by Diana during the couple’s honeymoon in 1981 on the royal yacht Britannia; they got married on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and then spent twelve days cruising around the Mediterranean before going on with their honeymoon at Balmoral, the royal family’s Scottish estate.

“Cufflinks arrive on his wrists — two ‘C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’s. Got it in one; knew exactly,” Diana told Morton, recalling the moment she noticed Charles wearing the jewelry.

“Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?”

Charles replied, “Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend,” Diana said. “And, boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy.”

Diana added: “It was such a good idea, the two C’s, but it wasn’t that clever.”

Diana said that it had been a very good idea to use the two C’s, but that it wasn’t particularly clever.

As Catherine Mayer, a royal biographer, pointed out, Camilla Parker Bowles had given the cufflinks to Charles prior to the wedding.

Mayer stated that Charles had lost one of the cufflinks at a ball held at Buckingham Palace before the wedding and became upset about the loss. During the honeymoon he wore the cufflinks.

Diana stated that she had already become preoccupied with Camilla prior to coming across the cufflinks.

“All the time at night I dreamed about Camilla and I was completely obsessed with her,” she said.

She mentioned that before the wedding she had come upon a bracelet which Charles had intended to give to Camilla as a parting present.

Interest in the controversy over the honeymoon has come back after a letter that Charles wrote on the trip was recently sold.

The letter fetched approximately $5,330 at an auction in July, and in it Charles said that married life was ‘very jolly’, adding that he and Diana frequently spent time apart, Diana getting together with the yacht’s crew while he read on deck.

Charles and Camilla Shand, who later became Camilla Parker Bowles, became involved with one another in the early 1970s and were seeing each other before her marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973; Camilla attended the wedding of Charles and Diana.

The marriage lasted for over ten years after the honeymoon; the couple had two sons, Prince William, who was born in 1982, and Prince Harry, born in 1984.

They separated in 1992 and finally divorced in 1996. Diana died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.

When speaking about her marriage in an interview with the BBC programme “Panorama”, Diana stated that “there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded”.

Charles got married to Camilla in 2005; after Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, Charles became king and Camilla was then given the title of Queen.
