Marlon Wayans returns to the Scary Movie franchise as both actor and co-writer in a new installment
The latest movie in the horror spoof series includes parodies of hits such as Get Out, Sinners and The Substance
Marlon said in a new interview that he invited Jordan Peele, writer-director of Get Out, to join the new movie, but Peele declined
No, the Wayans brothers don't tend to consult with the filmmakers they spoof in the Scary Movie franchise. Yes, that can get a bit awkward.
"You don't ask for permission, you just kind of do it and hope they enjoy it — and if not they'll never cast you in one of their movies, and that's OK," Marlon Wayans, star and co-writer of the new Scary Movie (in theaters now) recently told The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel reboot brings original franchise stars Marlon, Shawn, Anna Faris and Regina Hall back to the world of horror movie parodies. Skewered with silly homages are (spoiler alert!) such recent hits as Jordan Peele's Get Out, Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream V and Scream VI.

When Marlon, 53, told Peele that the 2017 hit Get Out was getting the Scary Movie treatment, the Oscar-winning writer-director apparently gave a neutral response. "He was like 'Oh, cool,' " recalled Marlon with a laugh.
"I was like, 'You want to be in it?' [Peele] said, 'Nah.' I was like, 'Alright, not that cool,' " he added.

When it comes to riffing on other filmmakers' work, continued Marlon, "They know that for us, mockery is the greatest form of flattery… The fact that we can do that and make the world smile with the stuff that they did, I'm grateful that they keep making great art."
The new Scary Movie was co-written by Marlon and his brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory, their nephew Craig and Rick Alvarez. The three Wayans brothers launched the franchise with 2000's Scary Movie and its 2001 sequel, but were subsequently pushed out of further installments by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
Among the other films parodied in the new Scary Movie are Weapons, Longlegs, The Substance and KPop Demon Hunters.
