Mariska Hargitay Got Brutally Honest About Whether She Wants to Leave ‘SVU’

Law & Order: SVU season 28 premieres October 8, 2026, on NBC, and fans are more than ready to see more from Mariska Hargitay.

Mariska has portrayed Captain Olivia Benson since the show’s pilot in 1999, and has made history as the longest-running woman to lead a primetime live-action television series, according to the Los Angeles Times. She’s also hosting the 2026 Emmys, which got us thinking about her future on SVU.

As of right now, Mariska Hargitay has no plans to leave Law & Order: SVU. She even addressed her future on the show when speaking with People in May 2026.

“The joke is, just when I think I should be winding down, I’m like, ‘No, I’m good for a couple more years!'” she joked with the outlet at the time.

Law & Order: SVU recently confirmed Mariska’s presence on the show with a new promo shot on Instagram.

“Squad, your Captain is calling,” the caption read on September 8. “#SVU premieres October 8 on NBC and next day on Peacock.”

Fans were ecstatic to see the update.

“Queen is already serving & the season hasn’t even started yet 🔥🔥🔥,” one person exclaimed in the comments. “Captain, queen, icon, legend! 🔥,” another agreed. “Anything for the captain ❤️,” a different follower added.

Law & Order: SVU isn’t Mariska’s only gig. She directed the 2025 documentary My Mom Jayne, about her late mom, Jayne Mansfield, which earned her two trophies at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. She also made her Broadway debut this past summer and spearheaded charity work with her Joyful Heart Foundation.
