Maria Shriver took to social media with a plea for a leader to bring people together in the wake of a series of recent tragedies over the weekend. Shriver's emotional three and a half minute video message is in response to a controversial social media post shared by President Donald Trump regarding the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, on Sunday night.
Trump's message describes the Reiners' deaths as a result of "Trump Derangement Syndrome," saying that the renowned director's criticism and disapproval of the current president led to his and his wife's deaths. The post has received its share of negative backlash from other celebrities, including musician Jack White and The View co-host Ana Navarro.
Shriver appears to be consumed with grief as she mentions the tragic Hanukkah shooting in Australia at Bondi Beach, the weekend shooting at Brown University, and the "tragic murder of her great friends Rob and Michele, here in Los Angeles." She claims the entire world is hurting, and people are shaken by these events.

In her video, the former First Lady of California calls the United States of America a "beautiful, great, big country with so many good people." Those people who feed, nurture, and work day and night to help others, she says, "deserve so much better than what we're getting out of the White House." The 70-year-old journalist remains composed yet somber as she calls out the president for his recent "petty, divisive" act.

At one point, the acclaimed author and journalist says, "I don't care who you voted for at this point in time." She goes on to say that the President of the United States should have character and use their platform to bring people together in a dignified and inspirational way. She mentions that this can be done regardless of religion, political parties, and gender. She says Trump is the one who can use his platform to inspire, and instead has done the exact opposite.
Shriver goes on, speaking directly to those who personally know the president—those who work for him, are friends with him, are related to him—"put him in a timeout," she says. "Explain to him the possibility of this office, the responsibility, the opportunity..."
Shriver's message is clear—"Come on," she says over and over again, each time with more conviction and desperation in her voice. Her call for compassion and unity struck a chord with many, including many celebrities: Jamie Lynn Sigler said, "You are my light in this world, Maria." Melanie Griffith also shared her support with a simple, "Beautifully said, Maria."
Thousands of additional comments are pouring in, thanking Maria Shriver for using her platform in this way today. Judging by the response, Shriver's appeal for togetherness reflects a common desire for leadership that emulates empathy and unity during these troubling times.
