Jesse Tyler Ferguson would jump at the opportunity to have an onstage reunion with one of his Modern Family costars.
While supporting The Bear costars Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach during the opening night of Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway, the 50-year-old actor reveals that, if he had to choose one of his former costars to star alongside him in a Broadway show, it would be Eric Stonestreet.
“We have been pitched ideas before,” Ferguson tells PEOPLE. “It just never has felt right.”
Indeed, the actor previously told Wendi McLendon-Covey during a March 3 episode of his Dinner’s On Me podcast that an idea was brewing for a spinoff focusing on his and Stonestreet’s characters, spouses Cameron and Mitchell, during the Covid-19 pandemic — although he wasn’t too interested in committing to the project.

"I was interested, but I was also supposed to do this play in New York,” he explained at the time. "It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people.’ ”
Beyond his desire to work with Stonestreet, 54, again outside of the Modern Family universe, Ferguson goes on to emphasize to PEOPLE that he would relish the opportunity to stand alongside “any” of his former costars on a Broadway stage.

“I mean, Sarah Hyland's a beast on stage and I would love to be with her on stage too,” he says, just days after Hyland, 35, ended her run as Connie Francis in Broadway’s Just in Time. “Ty Burrell, I used to see on stage when he was starting off in his career. So yeah, I mean any of them really, but of course I'm going to say Eric.”

As for the on-set moments that make Ferguson and Stonestreet laugh to this day? During a January episode of Dinner’s On Me, the pair recalled the hysterical moment that the show’s casting director, Jeff Greenberg, walked directly into a glass wall near the show’s craft service area.
“It’s the greatest moment ever,” Stonestreet quipped at the time. “We taped off his face mark, remember? His face mark lived that whole season.”
After being reminded of the incident, Ferguson added through his laughs, "I can't believe that happened. He just walked right towards us."
