Jennifer Lawrence says she missed out on starring in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because of online comments made by fans

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she recalled the internet deeming her "not pretty enough" to portray Sharon Tate

"I’m pretty sure that’s true, or he just never was considering me for the part and the internet just went out of its way to call me ugly," Lawrence joked

Jennifer Lawrence is opening up about how she believes she lost a major Hollywood role to Margot Robbie because of the internet.

During the Jan. 12 episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lawrence, 35, claimed that she missed out on starring in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because movie fans took to the internet and argued that she didn’t look right to play 60's star Sharon Tate.

Having been asked to list the filmmakers she’d love to work with, the conversation shifted towards Tarantino, 62, when podcast host Horowitz, 48, suggested that the legendary director once said he wants to work with Lawrence.

“It’s true, he said that. The Hateful Eight, the Jennifer Jason Leigh part was originally written for you, I believe,” said Horowitz.

“I turned it down, which I should not have done,” Lawrence joked.

“And I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, too, didn’t he want you?” Horowitz asked.

“Well, he did and then everybody was like, ‘she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’ ” Lawrence added.

“That’s not true,” Horowitz replied in disbelief.

“I’m pretty sure it is true,” said Lawrence. “Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story for so long that way, I believe it. I’m pretty sure that’s true, or he just never was considering me for the part and the internet just went out of its way to call me ugly.”

Horowitz argued the internet would “never do that,” adding, “they should rename the internet the sweetie pies.”

Robbie, 35, was ultimately cast to play Sharon Tate in the movie about the Manson murders.

Ahead of the film’s 2019 release, Sharon’s sister, Debra Tate, admitted in an interview with TMZ that she would cast Robbie over Lawrence.

“They are both extremely accomplished actresses, but I would have to say my pick would be Margot,” said Debra. “Simply because of her physical beauty and the way she carries herself, it’s similar to that of Sharon."

“I don’t think as much about Jennifer Lawrence, not that I have anything against her,” she continued. “She’s just, I don’t know, she's not pretty enough to play Sharon. That’s a horrible thing to say, but I have my standards.”

Once the movie was released, Debra told Vanity Fair that Margot’s portrayal of Sharon moved her to tears.

“The front of my shirt was wet. I actually got to see my sister again...nearly 50 years later,” she said.

Tarantino reacted to discussions about Lawrence going against Robbie for the role on the June 28, 2021, episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast.

He revealed that he was considering Lawrence to play a member of the Manson family rather than Sharon Tate. The role of Squeaky Fromme ultimately went to Dakota Fanning.

"Early on, I investigated the idea of Jennifer Lawrence playing Squeaky,” said Tarantino. “She came down to the house to read the script cause I wasn’t letting it out.

“So, she came down to the house and I gave her the script and said, ‘Go in my living room or go outside by the pool and read it.’ ” he continued. " So she read it and afterwards we talked about it a little bit."

"She was interested in doing it, but then it didn't work out," Tarantino concluded. "She's a very nice person and I like her, I respect her as an actress."
