Means also shared a GoFundMe campaign established by his wife, Leah.
"We started this business with money that Carey got from conventions and used a sewing machine I already had," Leah wrote in the campaign description. "I started sewing the plushies a year ago or so, I can't even remember how long. We only recently became an LLC because of hitting a certain amount through our business software, so had to go ahead and register with the state."
Leah explained that the proceeds from the GoFundMe are "really for keeping the lights on, internet, and food," noting that she makes "maybe 20-30 dollars on each toy" she creates.
"I know I need to keep the prices low to [make] sure that people can afford them," she said. "This isn't a great way to make money, this is really a work of love. If however, I succeed at this and grow the business more, maybe it will become something great."

Leah also clarified that she works a "regular job" in addition to the plushie store, and that Means still frequents fan conventions. "In the meantime, I really would like to eat, have lights, and still be able to be online talking to everyone and advertising the shop," she wrote. "Every little bit helps. Thank you so so much!"
She also noted that Means is "looking into disability for his heart failure," but that the process could "take another year or longer."
At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $15,400 of its $18,000 goal.

Leah previously shared an update on Means' Facebook page explaining that their lives were seriously upended by a car accident in January.
"The airbags went off, and I got my face smacked pretty bad, which caused a concussion," she wrote, noting that her visit to the ER revealed something that looked like cancer, but wasn't.
"I could not work because my head hurt so much, my back, my neck, my everything," she said. "I just couldn't concentrate and kept feeling dizzy. I could not do my regular job which requires reading a computer screen for 8 hours, understanding people and typing what they say, and troubleshooting their problems. So for months I just went to doctors and sewed."
Leah said that the couple has faced a pattern of misfortune. "Everytime I think that things are looking up, something else happens to make it impossible," she said. "Carey's heart failure happened, and now he can't go work in a dishpit, so that is out of the question. He is trying to get disability, but that may not even happen. In the meantime, I have gone back to work, and am still sewing. I am really tired though and cannot sleep when I need to, so I just don't."
She added, "I am really busy, I work all the time, and I am about to lose everything anyway. Can't afford car, can't afford rent, can't afford catfood, can't even afford coffee. Forget food, I am not even trying to think about that."
