The season 21 premiere of America’s Got Talent delivered exactly what fans have come to expect from the long-running competition series: emotional stories, jaw-dropping talent and more than a few bizarre acts.
The NBC hit returned on Tuesday, June 2, with judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel and Mel B back at the table along with host Terry Crews. In a first for the show’s premiere episode, three acts earned coveted Golden Buzzers.
One of the night’s earliest auditions came from a barefoot interpretive dancer named Aggy, who attempted to tell a story entirely through movement and body language. The unconventional performance left the judges puzzled.
“I wasn’t prepared for this,” Vergara admitted.
The act ultimately received enough "no" votes to be eliminated, but the audience loudly booed the judges’ decision. Cowell later invited the contestant back to perform again with music, though a second attempt failed to win over Vergara, who shut down the redemption bid.

The first Golden Buzzer of the season went to 14-year-old singer Lai Noelle from Texas, who delivered a powerful rendition of Sienna Spiro’s 2025 song “Die on This Hill.”
The teenager received a standing ovation before Cowell slammed his Golden Buzzer.
“You know what I think? Words aren’t necessary,” he said.
As gold confetti rained from the ceiling, Lai jumped up and down with excitement while Cowell joined her onstage for a hug. Vergara jokingly protested the moment, reminding Cowell that she had planned to use her own Golden Buzzer on the young singer.
“You’re unbelievable,” she teased.
“You have such a gift,” Cowell told Lai. “This is why we do this.”
The premiere also featured one of the strangest auditions in recent AGT history: a performer, named Nolan Ross Palmer, who swallowed flaming hot dogs whole. The stunt earned four "no" votes — and even an X from Cowell — after the judges expressed concern over the act.
Another novelty performer attempted to play songs using vegetables. After receiving multiple X's while performing with a beetroot, the audience convinced the judges to give him another chance. He returned with an apple and performed Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” only to receive even more X's.
By the end of the audition, the contestant had set an AGT record with eight X's after being buzzed out twice.
Among the night’s most impressive acts was Acro Crew, a group made up primarily of young acrobats and several talented dogs. Their energetic routine left the judges stunned. “I was blown away,” Mandel said.

Crews was equally impressed and awarded the group a Golden Buzzer. “I’ve never seen anything like that in my whole life,” the host said.

Danger also took center stage when married duo Tyrone Laner and Margo Tsarova showcased their high-risk knife-throwing and crossbow act. The pair’s performance featured rapid-fire archery and precision stunts that kept both the judges and audience on edge.
The laughs came courtesy of French comedian and actor Kev Adams, who revealed that he learned English just four years ago before delivering a stand-up set that earned praise from all four judges.
“You don’t know how hard it is to be funny in a language that’s not yours,” Modern Family alum Vergara said.
Mel B called Adams “crazy," "sexy," "cool” and "relatable," while Cowell praised him for being “fearless.”
“Your comedy is really, really, really funny,” Cowell added.
The night’s most emotional moment belonged to rapper Luke Taleno.

The South Beach street performer shared that he began writing music after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia as a teenager.
During his treatment, he met Pitbull through a hospital visit, an experience that inspired him to pursue a music career. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Rojas later received a recording studio built inside his family’s home, according to Miami New Times. During his audition, Taleno performed an original rap that referenced the judges.
While Mel B shared her opinion that it was not “the best” performance of the night, she praised the rapper’s heart and determination. Cowell noted how emotional he became while performing, while Mandel called him “the image of authenticity.”

Taleno immediately dropped to his knees and broke into tears as confetti filled the theater and AGT stage.
“You deserve it, buddy,” Mandel told him. “This is just the beginning.”
The premiere also featured a futuristic robot dance performance by humanoid robots created by Chinese robotics company Unitree.
According to NBC, season 21 will continue to raise the stakes with a new Judges Callback round later in the competition, giving select contestants a second chance to earn a spot in the live shows.
